Dark Drinks to Raise the Dead at Your Halloween Party

Spooky drinks go hand-in-hand with Halloween revelry. Over the years, I’ve had terrific Halloween-themed cocktails from neon green midori sours to blood red cosmopolitans. However, it’s the creepy, sinister-looking drinks that conjure images of potions and poisons. Brew up your own cauldron of tasty beverages for your party!

There are a few products available that will make a truly black mixed drink. Hullo, black vodka! I just found out that there is no American-made black vodka because US government regulations say that domestic distilleries cannot call a spirit ‘vodka’ unless it is ‘without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color.” So, if you want to make the following, you’ll have to get the imported stuff. The most commonly found brand is Blavod, but there is also Eristoff Black.

Spooky Halloween mixed drinks using black vodka

Screwed-Up Screwdriver
From MarthaStewart.com

1/4 cup ice
1/2 cup freshly squeezed tangerine juice
1 1/2 oz black vodka

Place ice in a tall glass and pour juice over. Pour the vodka over the back of a spoon into glass so it sits on top of juice and creates a layer of black. Serve immediately.

Berry Scary Martini
From Marthastewart.com

1 cup ice
1 oz black vodka
2 oz cherry juice
Fresh raspberries and blueberries, for garnish

Combine ice, vodka, and cherry juice in a cocktail shaker; shake vigorously. Pour into a martini glass. Garnish with raspberries and blueberries on a cocktail skewer, and place in drink. Serve immediately.

If you aren’t able to find black vodka, do not despair and cancel your party for fear of being heinously ridiculed! Here are a few alternative you can make that will appease any demon.

Black Fog

Black Fog

1 can Guinness stout
1 shot Chambord raspberry liqueur

Pour the shot of Chambord in to a glass of Guinness. Mix gently to blend.

Black Russian

Black Russian
From the Kahlua recipe site

1 part KAHL?A

Fill a rocks glass with ice, add Kahl?a and ABSOLUT VODKA and stir. Pour ingredients over ice cubes in an old-fashioned glass and serve.

Black Opal

Black Opal

1/2 oz. Vodka
1/2 oz. Gin
1/2 oz. Rum (Light)
1/2 oz. Triple Sec
1/2 oz. Raspberry Liqueur (Chambord)*
1/2 oz. Tequila (Optional)
1/2 oz. Sweet & Sour Mix
Lemon-Lime Soda

Pour all the liquors and sour mix into a glass with ice. Add the lemon-lime soda on top.

* I’ve also seen variations where you can add a splash of blue curacao or Opal Nera to darken the drink color.
